Brilliant! Debian Sarge fully functional in desktop mode after sorting out the problems with the XFree86 configuration. I have been able to initiate a session with Gnome 2.8.

Sotfware I’m planning to install & test in the short run:

_Office suite – OpenOffice.org
_Web server – Apache

By the way, I’m not a geek!
